Maybe you know how to manage your money, but you’re not doing it.

It’s one thing to have the knowledge and it’s another to have the money mindset that supports you in implementing that knowledge.

We can have all the information in the world, but unless our thoughts, beliefs, and feelings are aligned with that knowledge, it will be difficult or impossible for us to act on it.

It’s critical to your success that you be able to identify and dismantle the toxic, limiting thoughts and beliefs that are holding you back – about money or anything in your life.

Here’s how I recommend you approach this:

If you caught my previous video on creating healthy financial habits, then you already know how important your thoughts and beliefs are to getting you the results you want in your life – any result in your life from any area of life that is achieved with healthy habits.

If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to check that video out next.

So thoughts and beliefs are what set off the chain reaction to achieving healthy habits.

If you want to change your habits, you’ve got to work on your mindset around the subject that you’re working on. So if we’re working on healthy financial habits, you’ve got to start with having healthy and supportive thoughts and beliefs about money, yourself, and about money management. If you think money is the root of all evil, if you don’t believe in your own self-worth, or don’t have positive thoughts about the power of money management, then setting healthy financial habits will be a painful, uphill battle, that I think would make it impossible to achieve.

You have to be able to catch your negative or toxic thoughts and beliefs in real time, and have the awareness to say to yourself, “hey, I am thinking a limiting thought” or “I’m have a limiting belief.” This is the hardest part. Because most of the time that we have thoughts or feelings, they just feel like facts, just the way things are. They’re permanent and real, and that’s just life. So it’s hard to catch yourself having a limiting thought or belief and identify it as a limiting thought or belief.

For this reason, financial coaching is really helpful. Because we can’t see our own blindspots. Having a coach who can gently point out your limiting thoughts and beliefs, and can help you work through them is priceless. Doing it on your own, catching AND dismantling your limiting thoughts or beliefs is a really tall order. It’s asking a lot of yourself so go easy on yourself if you struggle with this. But it is possible for you to do it on your own. You’ll just need a lot of awareness, a lot of patience, and a lot of debate with yourself.

Because when you identify a limiting thought or belief, you’re going to need to question it – Is this really true? Sometimes you need to ask yourself a couple of times because we can be pretty attached to our thoughts and beliefs. Once you can say, ‘No. This thought or belief is not a cold, hard, unchangeable truth with a capital T, then you have room to re-consider that thought or belief. You can find examples that show your thought or belief is not always true or isn’t true at all. You can, without then swinging to the polar opposite belief, consciously create a new thought or belief or re-frame the old one so that it doesn’t hold you back.

To be sure, this isn’t going to be an overnight process to undo all your limiting thoughts and beliefs. It took you awhile to adopt them and it’ll take you awhile to uncover and dismantle them all but it’s well worth the time and effort.

Best of luck and I’ll catch you soon.
