Ever need a little inspiration to get out of bed in the morning?
I definitely do.
On this one particular day I needed to hear from the one and only Oprah to get my day going.
Still bleary eyed, I went to YouTube and clicked on the first Oprah compilation video that popped up. Just hearing her voice gave me life.
The video shared one great story, nugget, and truth after another, in rapid-fire succession.
In one segment, she talked about how crucial her gratitude practice is. She writes down 3 to 5 things she is grateful for each and every day. It’s a practice she has maintained for a very, very long time. For as far back as she can remember.
I’ve heard her talk about this before, so this wasn’t what struck me.
What I was shocked to learn is that she has received backlash for preaching about gratitude. Who knew that being grateful could be controversial?!
The gripe she gets is, “Well, Oprah, it’s easy for you to have gratitude because you’ve been so blessed.”
Her response is everything.
She gave us all a critical lesson on cause and effect here: “I don’t have gratitude because I am so blessed. I am so blessed because I have so much gratitude.”
In a flash, I envisioned myself responding to pushback I get for encouraging people to create and follow a budget.
The heavy resistance I get often, even from high income earners, is that they don’t feel like they have enough money to budget so therefore, they shouldn’t do it.
My new Oprah-inspired response is: “You don’t budget because you have enough money. You have enough money because you budget.”
Bam.
Oprah – and now me – with the comeback for the win!
